Builders in Morningside
Builders in Morningside, the EH10 district along Morningside Road and Comiston Road, with sandstone tenements on the shops and Victorian villas on the side streets.
Neighbourhoods
Morningside is the south-side street of shops on Morningside Road. Comiston Road, the A702, climbs away to the south through Greenbank and Fairmilehead. Canaan Lane, Cluny Gardens, Nile Grove and Morningside Drive fill the ground behind the shops. Merchiston begins once the road drops toward Bruntsfield. Craiglockhart and the Union Canal lie west. Blackford Hill is the open ground to the east.
Building stock
Tenements with ground-floor shops line the main road. Behind them, detached and semi-detached sandstone houses from the Victorian and Edwardian decades sit in their own front gardens, most of them under slate. Further up Comiston Road the houses get lower: bungalows and interwar semis replace the taller villas. Rear lanes show up behind some of the older plots, but many gardens are enclosed by stone walls and a single gate.
Access and parking
Morningside Road is a bus and shopping street, so a long stop at the kerb is rarely available. The side streets are residential, and a large share of the kerbside space is reserved for permits rather than being free all day. Tenement flats do not have a drive. A villa is more likely to have a short front path or a gate that a van can nose into, though several of the lanes toward Craiglockhart are steep and tight for anything bigger than a small truck.
Travel from our office
The office is 102 Gilmerton Dykes Crescent, Gilmerton, EH17 8JN. Morningside lies north-west of that address. Gilmerton Road, the A772, runs toward Liberton and the south side; from there the district is reached across Blackford and Merchiston. The other approach is the A720 and then north along Comiston Road, which turns into Morningside Road at the shops.
