The Grange
Builders in The Grange
Builders in the Grange, the EH9 villa streets of Grange Road, Lauder Road and Findhorn Place, south of the Meadows.
Neighbourhoods
The Grange is the low-density district south of the Meadows and Sciennes, between Morningside and Newington. Grange Road, Grange Loan, Lauder Road, Findhorn Place, Whitehouse Terrace and Relugas Road are the main lines. Blackford and the Royal Observatory are to the south. Causewayside and Newington Road are the east boundary, not part of the villa grid.
Building stock
Large Victorian sandstone villas on wide plots are the rule: slate roofs, walled front gardens, and often a coach house or a later garage at the side. Density is far lower than Marchmont or Bruntsfield. A house here is usually a single dwelling rather than a tenement stair of eight flats. Stone boundary walls and mature gardens are as much a feature as the houses.
Access and parking
The streets are wider than Queen Street or a colony lane. Many houses have a private entrance where a van can stand off the public road, though some gates and openings are narrow for a large vehicle. Through traffic uses Grange Road and Mayfield Road. Parts of the kerb are permit-controlled. The walled gardens mean materials go through a gate, not across a shared green.
Travel from our office
The Grange is nearly due north of the office. From 102 Gilmerton Dykes Crescent, Gilmerton Road leads to Liberton, and Mayfield Road and Craigmillar Park — the A701 — continue past the King’s Buildings toward Newington. That is the direct south-side approach, separate from the Comiston Road route used for Morningside.
