Builders in Bruntsfield
Builders in Bruntsfield, the EH10 tenements on Bruntsfield Place between Tollcross and Morningside, beside Bruntsfield Links.
Neighbourhoods
Bruntsfield is the length of Bruntsfield Place, the A702, from Tollcross down to the start of Morningside Road. Bruntsfield Links is the open grass east of the shops. Viewforth, Bruntsfield Gardens, Whitehouse Loan and the Merchiston streets immediately west are the residential part. Marchmont is the next tenement block east of the Links, a neighbour rather than the same street.
Building stock
Four-storey sandstone tenements dominate, with shared stairs and, on Bruntsfield Place, a shop or cafe at street level. A smaller number of villas face the Links. Flats typically have a common stair and a shared back green rather than a private driveway or a walled villa garden. Roof lines are slate, and many stairs still have the original stone treads.
Access and parking
Bruntsfield Place carries buses and through traffic, so it is a poor place to hold a van. The tenement streets have no drives, and permit bays fill up. Viewforth and the streets falling toward the canal are narrow. Anything for an upper flat has to go up the common stair; there is no service lift in a Victorian close. The Links themselves are public open space, not a compound for materials.
Travel from our office
Bruntsfield Place is the same A702 corridor as Morningside, one stretch closer to Tollcross. Starting at 102 Gilmerton Dykes Crescent, the south-side way in is Comiston Road becoming Morningside Road and then Bruntsfield Place. You stop further north than you would for the Morningside shops.
