Neighbourhoods
Stockbridge occupies the valley where the Water of Leith passes north of the New Town. Raeburn Place and Kerr Street are the shops. Hamilton Place, Deanhaugh Street, St Stephen Street and Saunders Street run off them. The colonies — Glenogle, Teviotdale, Avondale and the parallel rows — step up the north bank. Dean Village is downstream, under the Dean Bridge. Comely Bank Road and Comely Bank Avenue continue west from the same valley toward Craigleith; that ground is part of this district rather than a separate page.
Building stock
What you find here is a mix that does not match a single Edinburgh type. Georgian terraces face the river and St Stephen Street. Colony rows are a local form: upper and lower flats, each with its own front door, on narrow garden plots. Raeburn Place itself is tenement over shops. A few mews lanes sit behind the grander terraces. Storey heights and stair types change from one street to the next.
Access and parking
Colony lanes were not laid out for modern vans. Several are too narrow to turn in, and almost none of those flats has off-street parking. Around the circus and Saunders Street the carriageway is already full of permit bays. A delivery usually has to pause on Deanhaugh Street or Raeburn Place rather than enter the lane. The bridge and the riverside path are for people on foot, not for site plant.
Travel from our office
From 102 Gilmerton Dykes Crescent the drive crosses Edinburgh and drops into the river valley north of Princes Street. Queensferry Road is the northern way in, falling toward the shops by Comely Bank or by Deanhaugh Street. There is no bypass exit that lands inside Stockbridge itself.
