Builders in Leith
Builders in Leith, EH6, from Leith Walk and Great Junction Street down to the docks, Commercial Street and The Shore.
Neighbourhoods
Leith is the old port where the Water of Leith meets the Forth, north-east of the city centre. Leith Walk and Great Junction Street are the inland approaches. Constitution Street, Bernard Street and Commercial Street run toward the docks. The Shore, Sandport Place and the lanes behind them are the river quay inside Leith, not a separate district. Ocean Terminal, Victoria Quay and Western Harbour are the newer dock edge. Newhaven harbour is the next place north.
Building stock
Stone tenements follow Leith Walk. Along the river, former warehouses and bonds have been turned into flats, with taller floor-to-floor heights than a Victorian stair. The dock edge has later blocks of flats, some around private courts. A single job in Leith can be a tenement close, a warehouse floor or a new waterfront flat, and those three are built differently.
Access and parking
The Shore and the old lanes are cobbled and short of turning space. Leith Walk is the tram route to Newhaven as well as a bus street, so a vehicle cannot simply stop on the tracks. Dock streets often rely on a private court rather than a public kerb. The Water of Leith path and the quay edge are pedestrian.
Travel from our office
Leith is north-east of the office at 102 Gilmerton Dykes Crescent. One drive is through Edinburgh and down Leith Walk. The other stays to the east, using Seafield and Commercial Street so the port is approached from the shore side rather than from the Walk.
