Builders in Portobello
Builders in Portobello, the EH15 seaside town of the High Street, the Promenade and Joppa, on the east of Edinburgh.
Neighbourhoods
Portobello is the seaside town on Edinburgh’s east shore. The High Street and the Promenade run roughly parallel, joined by King’s Road, Bath Street and Bellfield Street. Joppa is the east end, toward Musselburgh. Figgate Park and the beach are the open ground. Abercorn sits inland of the High Street. It reads as its own town, not as a continuation of Leith.
Building stock
The High Street has Georgian and Victorian tenements over shops. Houses on the Promenade face the Firth of Forth, so stone, render and external timber take the sea wind. Toward Joppa the streets become bungalows and later houses with front gardens. That resort mix — a shopping high street, a seafront, and bungalows at the east end — is the local stock.
Access and parking
On a warm day the Promenade and the High Street are full, and neither is a sensible place to leave a large vehicle. Side streets are the practical stop. The Promenade is exposed and busy with people. The High Street is the bus route. Joppa’s residential streets are easier than the seafront for a driveway.
Travel from our office
Portobello is east of Gilmerton, not through the New Town. From 102 Gilmerton Dykes Crescent the coastal way is toward Duddingston and Milton Road East, the A199, which runs into the High Street. The A1 corridor south of the town is the other eastbound approach.
