Builders in Corstorphine
Builders in Corstorphine, the west Edinburgh village on St John’s Road under Corstorphine Hill, EH12.
Neighbourhoods
Corstorphine is west Edinburgh, on and under Corstorphine Hill. The old village is around Kirk Loan, off St John’s Road. Edinburgh Zoo stands on the slope above that road. Housing continues into Drumbrae, Clermiston and south toward Carrick Knowe. The Glasgow Road dual carriageway is the northern boundary, with the airport and Gogar beyond.
Building stock
A short stone village core remains around the kirk. Most of the district is interwar and mid-century bungalows and semi-detached houses, plus later estates. Front gardens and driveways are ordinary here, which is the practical difference from a tenement stair in Bruntsfield or a colony lane in Stockbridge. Roofs are tile as often as slate.
Access and parking
St John’s Road is an arterial with bus lanes, so stopping on it is restricted and the traffic is constant. Once you turn off it, a driveway is common and a skip is easier to place than in the city centre. Zoo traffic adds to Corstorphine Road on busy days. Hill streets on the north side are steeper than the bungalow grid on the south.
Travel from our office
Corstorphine is west of the centre, far from Gilmerton. Leave 102 Gilmerton Dykes Crescent toward the A720 and follow the bypass westward, then join the A8, Glasgow Road and St John’s Road. Driving through the centre and out along the same A8 is the other option when the ring road is heavy.
